Over the years the nickname evolved to The Scots. At one point in the university's history, the mascot was even briefly represented as a Scottish terrier, or "scottie" dog. The athletic program, in search of a more daunting athletic nickname, eventually changed the mascot to The Fighting Scot, which remains to this day.
